All applicants in the acting area must audition. These auditions take place in late January and early February in four cities across the country: New York, Chicago, San Francisco, and San Diego.

Again, here is information regarding auditioning for our program:

UCSD Audtion Tour Dates
January - February 2008

San Diego, at UCSD
January 11, 2008

New York, at NYU
January 24, 25, 26, 27, 2008

Chicago, at the Hyatt Regency Chicago
Actor Auditions February 5, 6, 2008

San Francisco, at ACT
February 9 and 10, 2008

Each audition will be scheduled for approximately 7 minutes. Although this time is limited, we hope we will be able to gain a clear impression of your present range of skills and imagination, the scope of your ability to analyze text, and the level of technical skills you have at your command. Most importantly, and most difficult, we seek to determine your potential for growth in the theatre.

We ask that you present two audition pieces. These monologues should meet the following criteria: Each piece should be no longer that two minutes in length. One should be from a contemporary play and the other from a classical/verse play. Obviously, it will be to your advantage if you choose clearly contrasting audition pieces that show us as much as possible your creative range. We also suggest that at least one piece be within your age range.

Attending your audition will be a member of the acting faculty, as well as other faculty members and possibly a representative of the La Jolla Playhouse. Callbacks are conducted at the end of each day for those candidates we wish to see again. At that time, we may request that you present a third audition peice or one or both of your original selections.

You must bring the following to your audition:

  • $40.00 cash or money order (payable to UC Regents) for the audition fee (no checks will be accepted). Please arrive early to check in with the tour stage mamager to confirm your audition slot and pay the audition fee.
  • Give the stage manager a local telephone number in the city where you are auditioning (friend, family, hotel)

At the conclusion of the audition tour, there will be a final selection process. We will then notify as soon as possible those actors we wish to admit to the acting program.

If you have questions about the application process or about the materials required of you, please contact Lee Montaño at (858) 534-1046 or by e-mail at lmontano@ucsd.edu
