BFA in Theatre Design & Technology, Texas State University


Joel Britt is a third-year MFA Lighting Design candidate and a native of Austin, Texas. Joel graduated summa cum laude with a BFA in Theatre Design and Technology from Texas State University, San Marcos. He has worked in Austin and San Diego as a freelance designer. Joel’s design portfolio includes theatre, dance, opera, and musical theatre, as well as installation lighting. Design work includes Other People, Sin Eaters, New Directions (Dance), Angels in America, Vieux Carré, Heaven on Earth (Sledgehammer_), Peter and the Starcatcher (The Barnstage Company), I Was Never Alone, Rent, Somebody Called, All in the Timing, and Free Clinic (scenic and lighting design). Assistant and Associate work includes Christmas Carol (Zachary Scott, Associate) Lillith (Associate), Venetian Twins, La Bete, Cherry Orchard, Yerma, and Gruesome Playground Injuries.

Joel was honored with an award for Excellence in Design from the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival for his work on Rent at both the Regional and National level festivals (2nd place nationally). He was also nominated for an Austin Critics Table award for his work on Somebody Called.
