Sandra Foster-King has excelled for 28 years as a UCSD Lecturer of Dance and a San Diego School of Creative and Performing Arts public school dance teacher; after living, performing, studying, teaching in Los Angeles, Washington DC, New York City and Sweden. Her choreography has been shown in California, across the nation and in Sweden. With a BFA and MFA in dance she is the recipient of many dance awards such as UCSD "Outstanding Faculty" by the BSU; "100 San Diego Black Role Models" with her portrait displayed in the SD Fine Arts Museum, San Diego Dance Alliance (SDDA) "Outstanding Contributor of Dance" 1997, SDDA Dance Educator of the Year 1999, Josephine Baker "Choreographer's Award" 1983, Ira Aldrige "Excellence in Dance" 2000, KPBS/Union Bank "Local Hero 2001"with a months filmed bio on Cox TV.
The Foster-King Dance Collection presented the 14th annual Int'l Association of Black in Dance Conference/Festival in 2001 bringing participants from each continent of the world to San Diego. She received commendations from Governor Grey Davis, Councilman/Deputy Mayor George Stevens, San Diego Convention Bureau, post-Mayor Susan Golding, with Mayor Murphy naming January 19, 2001 as San Diego's "Blacks in Dance Day". As a teacher/choreographer, she has helped her students to realize their dreams in professional and community theatre, world boat tours, television, stage, film, Broadway, Europe, universities, businesses, dance companies/schools such as Alvin Ailey, Philadanco, Dallas Black Dance, Cleo Parker Robinson, Joffrey Ballet, and Feld Ballet.
Her summers are filled with traveling, attending dance intensives, and as guest dance artist in Sweden. While studying acting for stage, commercials and voice over work, Sandra's commercial for Saturn cars ran on local TV. She also studied in the field of Expressive Arts at the San Diego Institute and the European Graduate School in Switzerland. She is a member of the International Association of Blacks In Dance, and is listed in the 1996, 1997, 2006 "Who's Who Among American's Teachers". She is a recipient of two Surdna grants to study at Bates Summer Festival in Lewiston, Maine in 2006 & 2007. Sandra received a Certificate of Attendance from Alvin Ailey summer intensive for Horton Technique pedagogy in 2010. She, again, will be a guest artist in the summer of 2011 in Sweden.
