Helpful Information about our Lighting Department

The Lighting Department facilitates lighting designs in all UCSD Department of Theatre and Dance facilities, as well as maintaining a permanent inventory of lighting equipment. Personnel in the department include the Lighting Supervisor, Master Electrician, and Production Electrician, all of whom are full-time, year-round employees, working on all University and La Jolla Playhouse productions. The permanent staff is enhanced with other professional technicians on a per-project basis, increasing the number of electricians to the level needed to fully realize each show's needs. In addition, work-study and practicum class students are used on University productions both as run crew and to assist in the installation of shows.

Spaces that are supported by the Lighting Department include the Mandell Weiss Theatre, the Mandell Weiss Forum Theatre, the Mandell Weiss Forum Studio Theatre, the Sheila and Hughes Potiker Theatre, Dance Studio 3, and other spaces as needs arise. All mainstage shows are fully supported by the department regardless of the space used for the show. A separate inventory of equipment is kept for each space to avoid conflicts when more than one show is in production.

The Lighting Department office is located on the second floor (lobby level) of the Mandell Weiss Theatre. Hours are based on the production schedule and vary throughout the year, but someone is generally available on week-days between 9 am and 4 pm. The office phone number is (858) 534-6697. Messages can be left 24 hours a day.
