About the Play

About the Author

The very underpinnings of American identity are challenged, as a typical family struggles to survive an iceberg, annihilation by coastal flooding, nuclear war and each other.

Thornton Niven Wilder, master American dramatist, was born into an intellectually gifted, ivy-league educated family ruled by a strict Congregationalist father who was American consul general to Hong Kong in the early 1900’s and nurtured by a poetess mother who taught her children a love for literature, language and drama. Thornton survived his twin brother at birth, had an older brother and three younger sisters – all highly accomplished in their own fields. A novelist and playwright, Wilder is the only Pulitzer-Prize winner to receive the award in both Drama and Literature: he received his first Pulitzer Prize (Literature) for The Bridge of San Luis Rey; his second (Drama) for Our Town; and, his third and last (Drama) for his “most ambitious project,” The Skin of Our Teeth. The latter premiered on a Broadway stage in November 1942 to mixed critical and public acceptance. Amidst accusations of plagiarism, audience walk-outs, and political hotspots over the playwright’s privileged status and intellectual presumptuousness, this playful tragicomic allegory with layer upon layer of “players” is now in its 65th year of production on international stages.
