About the Play

About the Playwright

Clifford Odets classic 1937 ensemble driven play about Joe Bonaparte, Lorna Moon and the 20 other characters chasing the American Dream arrives re-imagined in a boxing ring. Golden Boy tells the story of a boxer and his rise to fame and tragedy against the backdrop of the 1930’s American working class.

In the 1930s Clifford Odets became a charter member of the Group Theatre, an acting troupe founded by Harold Clurman, Lee Strasberg and Cheryl Crawford. Beginning with Waiting for Lefty in 1935, Odets quickly became the most famous young playwright in America. In the next four years he wrote five more plays, including Awake and Sing!, Golden Boy, and Rocket to the Moon.
