Acting Faculty
Professor Aysan Celik (she/hers) is an actor and theater maker. Her Off Broadway credits include Artificial Flavors (The Civilians/59E59), Gone Missing (NY City Center), The Undertaking (The Civilians/ 59E59), Paris Commune (The Civilians at BAM and The Public), The Black Eyed (New York Theater Workshop), Faust (Target Margin/Classic Stage Company), Pericles (Red Bull/Culture Project), Attempts on Her Life (SoHo Rep), Juárez: A Documentary Mythology (Theater Mitu/ Rattlestick), Turn of the Screw (The Acting Company/ Theater Row).
Aysan is a longtime member of the Obie-Award winning investigative theater troupe The Civilians, with whom she has created work and performed since 2002. She is also a founding member of experimental company Theater Mitu with whom she has created and performed in original works for 25 years. Recently with Mitu, she was co-creator and original performer of the installation / performance piece Juárez: A Documentary Mythology which toured to such venues as: Centro Cultural Paso Del Norte in Ciudad Juárez, Mexico, Mansion Arts Center in Beirut, Lebanon, Kontakt Festival in Torun, Poland, Cairo International Festival for Contemporary and Experimental Theatre, Teatro Memoria in Santiago de Chile, Encuentro Festival in Los Angeles, Rubin Center for the Visual Arts in El Paso, Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art, The Contemporary Arts Center in New Orleans, and Off Broadway. She also co-created and played Hamlet in Mitu’s performance installation Hamlet/Ur-Hamlet at New York University Abu Dhabi Performing Arts Center.
Aysan’s regional theater credits include Oregon Shakespeare Festival, Humana Festival, Cal Shakes, La Jolla Playhouse, Z Space, Studio Theater, American Repertory Theater, ArtsEmerson, and two national tours with The Acting Company -- other international credits include Andre Serban and Julie Taymor’s production of King Stag at the Barbican Centre in London.
Before coming to UCSD, Aysan spent 10 years based at New York University Abu Dhabi where she had the privilege of working with students from over 116 countries.
Aysan is a graduate of the UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television and the ART Institute at Harvard University.
