Bio

Jim Short is is a sixth-year PhD candidate from St. Louis, MO. He received his BA from Rhodes College and his MA from Washington University in St. Louis. With a passion for the physical stylization of Commedia dell’Arte, he trained at the Accademia dell’Arte in Arezzo, Italy. Coming off the heels of an acting and directing career focused on masked performance and theatre for youth, Jim’s research area continues to dive into his practical passions; his current qualifying papers focus on Early Modern performances of risk in Italy’s commedia dell’arte and English boy companies. With additional interests in Theatre for Youth, Theatre for Social Change, and the cross-section of Performance and Cognitive Studies, Jim has worked as an actor, director, and theatre educator for the Lexington Children’s Theatre, Shrine Mont Camps, the National Theatre for Children, and Heifer Project International. In the last year, Jim dramaturged Nguyen’s Vietgone at the San Diego Rep, was a resident dramaturg for the Native Film and Storytelling Institute, and taught a mask workshop for UC San Diego’s undergrad Company 157.
