Biography

MARGARET C. MARSHALL headed the Dance Program at UC San Diego from 1975-1997, 2000-02 and 2004-05. She authored the dance major and minor degrees and was a moving spirit behind the creation of the beautiful Wagner Dance Building. Margaret served as the Artistic Director of the San Diego Dance Institute 1997- 2001, where she supervised over 30 teaching artists. She has trained in all areas of dance, with Anthony Tudor, Eugene Loring, Bella Lewitsky, Lar Lubovitch, Joe Tramaine and many more. She has performed, choreographed, and/or directed across the U.S. and internationally (Australia, China). Ms. Marshall was selected National Dance Chair for the National Society of Arts and Letters from 1988 - 90, directing their National Ballet Career Awards competition in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and their Modern Dance Career Awards Competition in Little Rock, Arkansas. She recently served on the California Department of Education’s Visual and Performing Arts Curriculum Framework Criteria Committee,and for the UC Office of the President as Director for the UC/CSU Visual and Performing Arts statewide entrance requirements, and as Vice Chair of the UC Board of Admissions and Relations with Schools. Ms. Marshall has received numerous grants and awards for her artistic and community work.

Since retiring she has created the Margaret C. Marshall Endowment that annually supports the Department’s UG Dance performances. She currently serves on the San Diego Dance Theater’s Board of Trustees and volunteers at UCSD’s Medical Center, in the NICU. Her choreography was commissioned for the White Box ARTS FEST and she continues to mentor dance student at UCSD, within the San Diego community and abroad.
